Early Life and Education
Katarzyna Pelczyńska-Nałęcz was born in Warsaw, Poland, to a family with a strong academic background. Her father, Aleksander Pelczyński, was a prominent mathematician. She pursued her higher education at the University of Warsaw, where she earned a master's degree in sociology in 1994. Continuing her academic journey, she completed her doctoral studies at the Institute of Philosophy and Sociology of the Polish Academy of Sciences in 1999.
Career in Research and Foreign Policy
Pelczyńska-Nałęcz began her career at the Centre for Eastern Studies (CES) in Warsaw in 1992. Over the years, she rose through the ranks, becoming the head of the Russian Department and deputy director. From 2011 to 2012, she represented the CES in Brussels and coordinated joint projects with the French Institute of International Affairs. Her research focused on post-Soviet relations, socio-political dynamics in Russia and Eastern Europe, and EU policy towards these regions.
Diplomatic Service as Ambassador to Russia
In 2014, Pelczyńska-Nałęcz was appointed as the Ambassador of Poland to the Russian Federation. She served in this capacity from August 13, 2014 to July 31, 2016. During her tenure, she advocated for the repatriation of the wreckage of the Tu-154 plane that crashed in Smolensk, killing Polish President Lech Kaczynski and others. She also played a significant role in establishing a visa-free regime between the Kaliningrad Oblast and neighboring Polish regions.
Continued Engagements
After completing her diplomatic assignment in Russia, Pelczyńska-Nałęcz became the Director of the Stefan Batory Foundation's Open Europe Programme in 2016. The foundation works on various initiatives related to democratic values, civic participation, and international cooperation.

For her contributions, Pelczyńska-Nałęcz was awarded the "Bene Merito" Honorary Medal by the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 2010.
