Early Life
Kate Brown was born in Torrejon de Ardoz, Spain on June 21, 1960, to a United States Air Force officer. She was raised in Minnesota and graduated from Mounds View High School in Arden Hills, Minnesota in 1978. Brown received a Bachelor of Arts in environmental conservation from the University of Colorado at Boulder in 1981 and a law degree from Lewis & Clark College in 1985. She is married to Dan Little, and they have two adopted children.
Political Career
Oregon House of Representatives and SenateBrown entered Oregon politics in 1991 as a member of the Oregon House of Representatives. In 1996, she was elected to the Oregon Senate. Two years later, she was chosen as the Democratic Leader in the Senate.
Oregon Secretary of State
In 2009, Brown was elected Oregon Secretary of State and held that position until she became governor in 2015.
Oregon Governor
On February 13, 2015, Oregon Governor John Albert Kitzhaber announced his impending resignation amidst a corruption scandal. Brown succeeded him as governor on February 18, 2015. Upon taking office, Brown announced that she would extend the moratorium on the death penalty that had been imposed by her predecessor.
