Early Life and Education

Born on January 17, 1951, in Foligno, Ranieri Ranieri pursued a degree in teaching at the University of Perugia.

Political Career in the Regional Council

From 1976 to 1985, Ranieri served on the Umbrian Regional Council as a member of the Communist Party. She held various positions, including City Council of Perugia, board member of ASP (public transportation company in the province of Perugia), and leadership in the Umbrian Health Authority.

Ministerial Positions

Minister of Regional Affairs

Ranieri held the role of Minister of Regional Affairs in Massimo D'Alema's first and second governments from 1998 to 2000.

Minister of Equal Opportunities

In Giuliano Amato's second government, Ranieri served as Minister of Equal Opportunities from 2000 to 2001.

Public Controversy

In January 2001, Ranieri gained notoriety for an altercation with National Alliance representative Alessandra Mussolini on the television program "Porta a Porta." The incident escalated to physical and verbal altercations.

Parliamentary Career

Chamber of Deputies

Ranieri was a member of the Communist Party group in the Mixed Group in the 14th legislature and the Italian Communists group in the 15th legislature from 2001 to 2008.

Referendum on Reproductive Technologies

Ranieri supported the 2005 referendum in Italy on extending assisted reproductive technologies. She publicly criticized actress Sabrina Ferilli for allegedly supporting the referendum despite her personal preference for adoption.

Conflict with Oliviero Diliberto

Ranieri accused Communist Party leader Oliviero Diliberto of authoritarianism. She presented a rival list for the party's leadership in 2008, gaining 12% of delegate support.

Breakaway from CPI

After her defeat at the CPI's 5th Congress in 2008, Ranieri co-founded the new party "Unire la sinistra" (Unite the Left). The party later merged into the Left, Ecology, Freedom party in 2009.

Recent Political Activities

In 2010, Ranieri left the Left, Ecology, Freedom party. She currently represents the Radical Socialist Movement within the left-wing coalition "Potere al Popolo" (Power to the People).
