Katri Kulmuni: A Rising Star in Finnish Politics
Early Life and EducationKatri Kulmuni was born on September 4, 1987, in Tornio, Finland. She completed her secondary education at Tornio Co-Educational Lyceum in 2006 and went on to pursue a Bachelor of Social Sciences degree from the University of Lapland, which she earned in 2010. In 2018, she completed a Master's degree in Social Sciences.
Political Career
Local GovernmentKulmuni's political career began in 2012 when she was elected to the Tornio City Council, where she served four terms. She received increasing support in each election, receiving 801 votes in 2021.
Member of Parliament
In 2015, Kulmuni was elected to the Finnish Parliament (Eduskunta) as the representative for the electoral district of Lapland. She was re-elected in 2019. During her tenure, she has served on various committees, including the Administrative Committee, the Legal Affairs Committee, and the Committee on Budget and the Delegation to the Nordic Council.
Ministerial Appointments
Minister of Economic AffairsIn 2019, Kulmuni was appointed Minister of Economic Affairs in Prime Minister Antti Rinne's government. She held this position until June 2019 when she was appointed Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance.
Minister of Finance
As Minister of Finance, Kulmuni oversaw the Finnish economy during the COVID-19 pandemic. She also faced controversy over her approval of government-funded speech training, which was later deemed to have violated internal procurement regulations. Kulmuni resigned from her post in June 2020 and was replaced by former Prime Minister Matti Vanhanen.
Political Leadership
Chairwoman of the Centre PartyKulmuni served as Chairwoman of the Centre Party from 2019 to 2020, becoming the first woman to hold this position. She oversaw the party's participation in the government and led the party into the 2020 mayoral elections. In 2020, she lost the election for party chairperson to Annika Saarikko.
Other Activities
In addition to her political career, Kulmuni is the Chairwoman of the Finland-Russia Society. She is also a member of the Board of Metsäteollisuus ry, an association representing the Finnish forest industry.
Personal Life
Kulmuni is in a civil union with Jyrki Peisa, a member of the Metsäteollisuus ry Board. They have a daughter, born in 2022.
