Early Life and Political Beginnings
Born in Kingston-upon-Thames, London, Nicky Morgan is the daughter of Peter Griffith, a Conservative member of the local council. She attended Surbiton High School and later studied law at St. Hugh's College, Oxford. After graduating, she became a solicitor specializing in corporate law at the prestigious firm Travers Smith.
Conservative Politics
Morgan joined the Conservative Party in 1989 and served as Chairman of the Wessex Young Conservatives from 1989 to 1991. She unsuccessfully contested the Islington South and Finsbury constituency in the 1991 general election. In 2005, she attempted to win the Loughborough seat but came second. She eventually entered Parliament in 2010 after another attempt to win the Loughborough seat.
Cameron's Government (2013-2016)
After serving as an Assistant Whip, Morgan was promoted to the role of Economic Secretary to the Treasury in 2013. In 2014, she became Financial Secretary to the Treasury and Minister for Women. She initially opposed same-sex marriage, citing Christian beliefs, but later stated that she had changed her views.
Education Minister (2014-2016)
In 2014, Morgan was appointed Secretary of State for Education and Minister for Women and Equalities. She faced some criticism for her stance on same-sex marriage, but responsibility for this policy was later transferred to Nicholas Boles.
Second Cameron Government (2015-2016)
After the 2015 general election, Morgan retained her ministerial positions. She continued to express support for same-sex marriage. In 2016, she was replaced as Education Secretary by Justine Greening in Theresa May's first government.
House of Commons Career (2016-2019)
Morgan was elected Chair of the House of Commons Treasury Select Committee in 2017.
Johnson's Governments (2019-2020)
