Early Life and Education

Katrin Raik was born and raised in Tartu, Estonia, in the family of professors Ants Raik and Helve Raik. She received an education as a historian and teacher of history and social studies, eventually earning a doctorate in history (Estonian history). As a historian, she interned at the Universities of Hamburg and Marburg in Germany. Her primary areas of interest and research include the history of Narva, the historiography of the early modern period, and multicultural education in Estonia.

Academic Career

Raik held various positions at the University of Tartu from 1991 to 1999. From 1999 to 2007 and 2009 to 2015, she served as the director of the Narva College. From 2007 to 2009, she was the vice-chancellor of the Estonian Ministry of Education and Science. In 2015, she became the rector of the Estonian Academy of Security Sciences.

Political Career

Raik's political career began in 2018 when she was appointed as the Minister of the Interior of Estonia, a position she held until 2019. She then served as a member of the Riigikogu (Estonian Parliament) from 2019 to 2020. In December 2020, she was elected as the mayor of the city of Narva.

Mayoralty

As mayor, Raik has faced both challenges and successes. In August 2021, she faced a vote of no confidence, which she ultimately survived. However, in November 2021, she was re-elected as the mayor of Narva, receiving a majority of votes. After the 2021 municipal elections, in which she received nearly 4500 votes, she was once again re-elected as the mayor on December 16, 2021.

Throughout her career, Raik has made significant contributions to Estonian society. As a historian, she has extensively researched and published on Narva's history and Estonian historiography.
