Early Life and Education

Néstor Kirchner was born on February 25, 1950, in Río Gallegos, Argentina. His paternal grandparents emigrated from Bern, Switzerland, to South America in the late 19th century. Kirchner's father, Néstor Carlos, was a telegrapher who met his mother, María Juana Ostoich, a Chilean-Croatian postal worker, through telegrams. Kirchner had two sisters, Alicia and María Cristina.

Kirchner attended school in his hometown but was only a mediocre student. However, he went on to study law at the National University of La Plata in the 1970s.

Political Involvement

While at university, Kirchner joined the Justicialist Party, founded by President Juan Domingo Perón. This party remained the largest in Argentina for over half a century.

Kirchner also met his future wife, Cristina Elizabeth Fernández, during his university years. She was also a political activist and later became a senator for Santa Cruz Province.

Career

After graduating with a law degree, Kirchner practiced law and became politically active in his province of Santa Cruz. He served as a provincial legislator and later as governor.

Presidency

Kirchner was elected President of Argentina in 2003. His presidency was marked by economic growth and social reforms. He also worked to improve relations with neighboring countries.

Family

Kirchner and his wife, Cristina, have two children: Máximo and Florencia. Máximo studied law but later joined a real estate company. The Kirchners are Catholic but rarely attend church.
