Kazuo Kuroko
Academic Background
Masao Kuroko, a renowned Japanese literary critic, holds a Bachelor's degree from Gumma Prefectural University. After his undergraduate studies, he embarked on a six-year career as a high school teacher in Gumma Prefecture. Subsequently, he enrolled in a doctoral program at Hosei University, but left without submitting a dissertation.
Research and Career
In 1979, Kuroko's revised master's thesis, titled "Kitamura Tokoku: The Celestial Affinity," was published, with Hideaki Odakiri as his academic advisor. Kuroko then began combining teaching at various universities with his literary research.
Utilizing the social unrest that permeated Japan in the late 1960s as a starting point, Kuroko has identified the relationship between literature and politics and the definition of modernity as central questions in his work. From this perspective, he analyzes the writings of authors such as Kenzaburo Oe, Ayako Miura, Haruki Murakami, and Wahei Tatematsu, as well as the theme of atomic bombings in Japanese literature.
Current Focus
In recent years, Kuroko has shifted his focus towards exploring the potential of literature as a means of spiritual salvation in contemporary society. He continues to be an influential voice in the field of Japanese literary criticism.
