Keith Andes was an American actor who began his career as a theater actor on Broadway while serving in the US Air Force during World War II. In 1947, he received the Theatre World Award for his performance in "The Chocolate Soldier". During the same years, he also starred in productions such as "Kiss Me, Kate".
Early Life and Education:
Andes started working in radio at the age of 12 while still attending Upper Darby High School. After graduating, he became a student at Oxford University but eventually received his bachelor's degree from Temple University in Philadelphia in 1943. He furthered his education at the Philadelphia Conservatory of Music, focusing on his vocal abilities.
Career in Theater and Film:
Andes began his theater career on Broadway while serving in the US Air Force during World War II. In addition to his award-winning performance in "The Chocolate Soldier", he appeared in various productions, including "Kiss Me, Kate". His film debut came in 1944 in the war drama "Winged Victory" directed by George Cukor. Although his name did not appear in the credits, it marked the beginning of his career. Andes often played supporting roles in films and had the opportunity to work with many Hollywood stars. In 1952, he appeared in Fritz Lang's drama "Clash by Night" alongside Barbara Stanwyck and Marilyn Monroe. That same year, he starred with Robert Newton and Linda Darnell in the adventure film "Blackbeard, the Pirate". While he did not often land leading roles in films, Andes had a steady stream of work.
Television and Later Career:
In the 1950s, Andes transitioned to television and continued his work on Broadway, appearing in musical comedies such as "Wildcat" and "Maggie". He had roles in several television series, including "The Outer Limits", "Petticoat Junction", "Run for Your Life", "Star Trek", and "Cannon". In the 1970s, he appeared in "The Streets of San Francisco". Notably, his role in the second season of "Star Trek" brought him further recognition. Throughout his life, Andes played approximately fifty roles, the majority of which were supporting characters.
Personal Life and Legacy:
Andes was married twice. His first marriage was to Jean Alice Cotton in 1948, and they had two sons named Mark and Matt. They divorced in 1961, and later that year, Andes married Shelah Hackett. However, he also divorced her. Both of his sons pursued careers in music. Andes resided in California and had a passion for racehorses. He owned three Arabian horses and kept them on his three-acre ranch in Chatsworth. On November 11, 2005, Andes was found dead in his home in Newhall, California. It was later revealed that the 85-year-old actor, who had been battling cancer and other illnesses, had taken his own life to prevent his illnesses from overcoming him.
