Kelis Rogers, an American singer and songwriter, is a renowned R&B star. She was born on August 21, 1980, in the Harlem neighborhood of New York City, USA. Her father, an African American, was a jazz musician and a preacher in the local church, while her mother, of Puerto Rican descent, worked as a fashion designer. Kelis' parents took great care in shielding her from the influence of the streets.
Early Musical Journey
Kelis showed an interest in music from a young age. At the age of two, she was already singing in a church choir and later performed in the Harlem Children's Choir. She attended a prestigious private school in Manhattan, where she diligently learned to play the piano, violin, and saxophone.
Rise to Fame
At the age of 16, Kelis enrolled in the famous LaGuardia School for the Arts, one of the most renowned arts schools in New York City. During this period, she lived apart from her parents and worked to support herself. Despite the challenges, Kelis continued to study and worked even harder. Eventually, she formed and led a trio called BLU (Black Ladies United). Although BLU did not gain much recognition musically, Kelis' vibrant personality and performances caught the attention of industry professionals.
After some time, Kelis began appearing in concert programs at Harlem clubs and started working as a backup vocalist for various young rap groups, including Gravediggaz, a side project of the famous rapper RZA.
Breakthrough
Kelis's career took off when she was introduced to the production team Neptunes after graduating from LaGuardia School. In 1999, her first single "Caught Out There" was released, accompanied by a music video. Following the single's success, Kelis recorded her debut album "Kaleidoscope." Although the album did not achieve commercial success in the US, it was well-received in Europe. It reached the top 40 of the British charts and earned Kelis a Brit Award for Best Debut. After a small tour, Kelis began working on her second album, "Wanderland," which was released in 2001. The album featured collaborations with artists such as Busta Rhymes, Timo Maas, Foxy Brown, OutKast, Guru, Nas, and Gwen Stefani.
Continued Success
Kelis released her third album, "Tasty," in 2003. While it had fewer notable collaborations, the album showcased the work of the Neptunes producers, who significantly enhanced its content and sound. Finally, Kelis gained recognition in her home country, the United States. She released her fourth album, "Kelis Was Here," when she was already an established R&B star.
