Kenneth Downing Jr., better known as K.K. Downing, is a British guitarist and songwriter. He was a member of the heavy metal band Judas Priest from 1969 to 2011.
Early Life
Kenneth Downing Jr. was born on October 27, 1951, in West Bromwich, United Kingdom. He dropped out of school at the age of 15 and was kicked out of his home at 16. Unsure of what he would do with his life, Downing picked up a guitar and found his passion. He was inspired by guitarists such as Jimi Hendrix, John Mayall, and Eric Clapton, and by the late 1960s, he was playing in a local band with Ian Hill.
Journey with Judas Priest
In 1973, vocalist Rob Halford joined the band, and shortly before their debut album was released in 1974, guitarist Glenn Tipton also joined Judas Priest. It was during this time that Downing adopted the stage name "K.K." when a girl in Denmark couldn't pronounce his name and simply called him "K.K." Throughout his 35-year career with Judas Priest, Downing played alongside Hill, helping the band achieve success and critical acclaim. He left Judas Priest on April 20, 2011.
Style and Technique
Downing is known for his aggressive, bluesy solos and his dual guitar playing with Glenn Tipton. His solos maintained a consistent style throughout his career but incorporated various playing techniques over time. His guitar tone is slightly rawer and rougher compared to Tipton's playing style. Downing focuses on speed, precision, and melodic execution in his playing, utilizing techniques such as harmonics, tremolo, and other guitar methods. In the early days, Downing used a wah-wah pedal but gradually phased it out in the mid-80s. However, he started using it again in 1996 when Tim "Ripper" Owens joined Judas Priest, allowing the band to experiment with their music even more. The wah-wah pedal can be heard on the album "Jugulator" released in 1997. Downing continued to use this effect for the following album with Owens, "Demolition," but when Rob Halford returned to the band, Downing once again abandoned its usage.

Kenneth Downing Jr. is recognized as one of the greatest metal guitarists of all time and holds the 23rd position on the list of the 100 greatest metal guitarists according to various magazines.
