Early Life and Journey with Disability

Kevin Michael Connolly was born on August 18, 1985, in Helena, Montana, USA. At four months of pregnancy, Connolly's mother, Mary, experienced a personal tragedy that led her to take custody of her four nephews. Amidst legal battles and the diagnosis of cancer in both her parents, Mary found solace in the anticipation of her son. However, upon Kevin's birth, she recognized that something was amiss.

Doctors confirmed that Kevin was born with a sporadic birth defect that resulted in the absence of both of his legs. Despite numerous inquiries, medical professionals were unable to provide a definitive explanation for his condition. Unwavering in their love and determination, Kevin's parents, Mary and Brian, refused to allow his disability to define his life.

Embracing Activity and Adventure

Mary and Brian raised Kevin as an ordinary child alongside his sisters, Meagan and Shannon. They encouraged him to participate in various activities, including swimming, hiking, and nature walks. As he grew older, Kevin took on gymnastics and wrestling, which honed his dexterity, coordination, and upper body strength. He even mastered the impressive handstand.

Discovering Mono-Skiing and Skating

At the age of ten, Kevin embarked on a new adventure: adaptive mountain skiing, also known as mono-skiing. He quickly excelled in the sport, eventually earning a silver medal at the Junior X Games. Determined to live an active lifestyle, Kevin opted to use a wheelchair only as a last resort, primarily relying on his specially designed skateboard that he propelled with his hands.

The Rolling Exhibition and Advocacy

In 2006, while traveling in Vienna, Europe, Connolly was weary of the constant stares he received. Inspired by his frustrations, he began photographing the curious onlookers who passed by. Recognizing the potential impact of his images, he embarked on a global expedition in 2007.

Over the course of 11 weeks, Connolly traversed 15 countries, capturing hundreds of candid photographs. Upon returning to the United States, he launched "The Rolling Exhibition.com," a website showcasing his powerful series. The exhibition garnered significant media attention, with features in CNET, NPR, "The Washington Post," and ABC's "20/20."

Writing and Television

Connolly's unique perspective and advocacy for people with disabilities extended beyond photography. In 2009, he published his acclaimed memoir, "Double Take," which received positive reviews and was featured in "Publishers Weekly."

In 2013, the Travel Channel premiered a reality television series titled "Armed & Ready," starring Connolly. The show chronicled his adventures as he traveled the United States, participating in a wide range of activities and raising awareness about individuals with disabilities.
