British Twin Girls with Different Skin Colors

Identifying twins can often be difficult. But not in the case of British twins Kian and Remy, who will soon turn seven. These beautiful twins share the same mischievous smile, but Kian has dark skin with big brown eyes, while her sister Remy is a blue-eyed blonde with light, curly hair and pale skin. The black and white twins, born 60 seconds apart, owe their difference to the combination of their parents' genes, which, according to estimates, occurs once in a million. Their mother, Kylee Hodgson, and their father, Remi Horder, both had white mothers and dark-skinned fathers.

A Surprising Birth

For the parents, the news of having twins was already a shock. When the girls were born in April 2005 by cesarean section, Kylee experienced an even greater shock. Remy was born first, weighing 2.4 kg; a minute later, Kian was born, weighing 2.7 kg. Kylee recalls the time after their birth: "At first, I didn't see the girls. They were both taken away for observation, and then the midwife came back - and placed them in my arms. I noticed they both had equally beautiful blue eyes, but at the same time, Remy was light-skinned, and Kian was dark-skinned... It seemed strange, but I felt unwell after the cesarean, so I didn't pay much attention to it. The only thing that mattered then was that my precious daughters had safely arrived in this world."

A Unique Pair

Nobody immediately explained why the twins had different skin colors. According to the Multiple Births Foundation, an organization that deals with multiple pregnancies, such a turn of events can occur when two eggs are fertilized, with one inheriting the gene for white skin and the other for black skin. Jane Denton from the organization adds, "This happens very rarely. But it is still possible for one child to be dark-skinned and the other white if the parents themselves are of mixed race."

Close Sisters

Kylee brought the girls home from the hospital after four days. Since then, Kian and Remy have been inseparable. Remy's eyes remained blue, while Kian's gradually turned brown. According to their mother, both girls love dancing and music, although they have different groups of friends. Kylee is still occasionally asked why her daughters are dressed the same. She has to explain that Kian and Remy are twins, leaving curious strangers puzzled. Born as a "black tree" and "ivory," Kian and Remy have different interests. Kian is slightly more assertive and louder. She has a great interest in the animal world. Remy, on the other hand, is calmer. She spends more time contemplating before taking action. Remy loves cooking. However, these differences do not prevent the black and white twins from being best friends. They play together, bathe together, read together, and always help each other. As Kylee concludes, "They don't notice the fuss about skin color, they just see each other as they are. They don't see the difference that everyone else sees."
