Kimia Alizadeh, Iranian-Born Taekwondo Champion

Early Life and Career

Kimia Alizadeh, a taekwondo athlete of Iranian-Azerbaijani descent, was born in Karaj, Iran. Her father hailed from Zonuz near Tabriz, while her mother's origins were in Ardabil.

Olympic Success

In 2016, Alizadeh made history by becoming the first Iranian woman to win an Olympic medal, claiming bronze in taekwondo at the Summer Games in Rio de Janeiro. However, her family name was mistakenly recorded as "Zennurin" until after the Olympics.

Decision to Leave Iran

In January 2020, Alizadeh made the bold decision to leave Iran and seek refuge in a European country. The Iranian news agency ISNA first reported her departure, which Alizadeh later confirmed on Instagram. She cited a lack of freedom and the requirement to adhere to strict dress codes and state propaganda as her reasons for leaving.

Future Plans

Despite her departure from Iran, Alizadeh remains committed to competing in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. She is reportedly considering representing Germany at the Games, continuing her quest for Olympic glory on a new stage.
