Kiran Desai is an Indian writer and novelist, currently residing in the United States. She was born on September 3, 1971, in New Delhi, where she lived until the age of 14. Along with her mother, she moved to the United Kingdom for a year and then to the US, where she received her literary education at Bennington College, Hollins University, and Columbia University.
In 1997, Desai gained recognition when her work was featured in an anthology of Indian literature in the second half of the 20th century, edited by Salman Rushdie, and published in The New Yorker. Her first published novel, "Hullabaloo in the Guava Orchard," was released in 1998.
Desai's breakthrough came in 2006 when she won the Booker Prize for her novel "The Inheritance of Loss." This achievement made her the youngest writer to ever receive this prestigious award. The novel explores themes of identity, displacement, and the impact of colonialism in India.
Kiran Desai is the daughter of renowned writer Anita Desai. Her upbringing and exposure to different cultures have greatly influenced her writing, allowing her to create rich narratives that resonate with readers worldwide.
