Michael Graves was an American architect and designer known for his contributions to postmodern architecture and product design.
Early Life and Education
Born and raised in Indiana, Graves developed a passion for drawing at a young age. He earned his bachelor's degree from the University of Cincinnati and his master's degree from Harvard University, where he also spent two years studying in Rome.
Career in Architecture
In 1964, Graves established his architecture firm in Princeton, New Jersey, where he later also became a professor. Along with Peter Eisenman, Richard Meier, and others, he formed the "New York Five," a group that sought to create a "pure modernism" based on the early work of Le Corbusier.
Notable Architectural Designs
Graves' prolific architectural portfolio includes designs for Target Corporation, Alessi, the University of Virginia, the Detroit Institute of Arts, Walt Disney Studios, and the Dutch Ministry of Health.
Product Design and Collaborations
Beyond architecture, Graves also excelled as a product designer, collaborating with companies such as Alessi, Target, and Herman Miller. His iconic teapot for Alessi became a modern design classic.
Personal Life and Legacy
In 2003, Graves suffered a partial paralysis but continued to work. He passed away on March 12, 2015, at his home in Princeton. Graves' legacy lives on through his architectural designs and the influence he had on the field of postmodern architecture and design.
