Early Life and Education

Kosta Trifković, the notable Serbian playwright, was born as the only child of Atanasije and Ane Trifković on November 28, 1843, in Novi Sad, Vojvodina. Initially destined for a maritime career, young Kosta embarked on his first sea voyage before graduating from secondary school. However, his frail health proved an obstacle, and after two years of naval studies, he pursued law at the University of Rijeka.

Legal Career and Literary Pursuits

Upon completing his studies, Trifković returned to Novi Sad and established his legal practice. However, his passion for the stage soon consumed him. He became a dramatic critic and submitted several of his plays for production. His works captivated audiences with their humor and light-hearted depiction of urban life.

Playwright and Translator

Trifković's plays garnered immense popularity, and he penned a total of 15 original works. Some of his most famous plays include "Čestitam" (1872), "Školski nadzornik" (1872), "Izbiračica" (1873), and "Mila" (1884). Additionally, Trifković translated numerous foreign plays for the Serbian stage. His own works have been translated into German, French, Italian, Hungarian, Slovenian, Bulgarian, and other languages.

Legacy and Impact

"Izbiračica" was adapted into a successful 1961 Yugoslav comedy film. Trifković's contributions to Serbian literature and theater have left an enduring mark. He passed away in Novi Sad on February 19, 1875, at the age of 31.
