Biography of Franjo Dugan-Branović
Early Life and EducationFranjo Dugan-Branović, a prominent Croatian composer and conductor, was born in 1881. He exhibited musical talent at an early age and pursued piano studies in Zagreb. After completing his initial studies, Branović expanded his horizons and enrolled in the prestigious Vienna Music Academy, where he excelled in composition from 1912 to 1914.
Career as a Conductor
In 1915, Branović began his illustrious conducting career at the Zagreb Opera, where he remained until 1927. During this period, he honed his skills and established a reputation as a talented and versatile maestro. In 1928, Branović joined the renowned Anna Pavlova's ballet troupe for a concert tour of Germany, the Netherlands, Switzerland, and Italy, where he brilliantly conducted the music for their captivating performances.
Back to Zagreb and International Recognition
Upon his return to Zagreb in 1929, Branović resumed his position as conductor at the Zagreb Opera, where he remained until 1943. His tenure was marked by his passion for Russian music, which became a prominent feature in his repertoire.
From 1943 to 1946, Branović expanded his horizons by working in Bratislava, where he led both the local radio orchestra and the opera theater. In 1951, he relocated to Belgrade, where he served as the conductor of the Belgrade Radio Orchestra until 1964. In addition to his conducting responsibilities, Branović also taught at the Belgrade Music Academy and conducted operas in the city.
Compositions and Legacy
As a composer, Branović's most notable work is the ballet "Licitarsko srce" (Gingerbread Heart), which was based on his own libretto and premiered in 1924. This piece became one of the first national ballets in Yugoslavia and remains a beloved classic. Branović also composed several operas, including "Stri?eno-ko?eno" (Razor and Scissors) in 1932 and "Nevjesta od Cetingrada" (The Bride from Cetingrad) in 1951. His repertoire includes various ballets, cantatas, orchestral works, and vocal-symphonic compositions.
Franjo Dugan-Branović passed away in 1967, leaving an indelible mark on Croatian and international music. His compositions and conducting legacy continue to inspire and delight audiences worldwide, cementing his position as one of the most influential figures in Croatian musical history.
