Biography of Mauno Henrik Koivisto
Mauno Henrik Koivisto was a Finnish statesman and political figure, born in Turku in 1923 to a family of seafarers. He served as the President of Finland and held a Doctor of Philosophy degree since 1956.
Early Life and Military Service
During the Winter War (1939-1940), Koivisto worked in the fire brigade, and during the Continuation War (1941-1944), he served in the army under the leadership of Lauri Törni. He held the rank of Junior Sergeant.
Political Career
In 1947, Koivisto joined the Finnish Social Democratic Party (SDP), which played a significant role throughout his political career. He served as the Minister of Finance in 1966-1967 and 1972. Additionally, he served as the Prime Minister of Finland in 1968-1970 and 1979-1981.
Presidential Years and Economic Crisis
In 1982, after the resignation of Urho Kekkonen, Koivisto became the President of Finland. During his 12-year presidency, Finland experienced an economic downturn, but he managed to lead the country out of the crisis. Initially, he followed Kekkonen's foreign policy course, seeking close relations with the leadership of the Soviet Union and avoiding any conflicts with them.
Shift in Foreign Policy
After the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, there was a shift in Finland's foreign policy. In September of that year, Finland withdrew from the Treaty of Friendship, Cooperation, and Mutual Assistance. Koivisto believed that Finland could join the European Union (EU) and expressed his support for it in 1991. Furthermore, since the early 1990s, the Finnish government has been supportive of immigration from countries of the former Soviet Union, particularly those with Finno-Ugric roots.
