Kristaps Sotnieks is a professional ice hockey player from Latvia. He was born on January 29, 1987, in Riga, Latvia.

Early Career

Sotnieks began his senior league hockey career in the 2004-2005 season with HK Riga 2000. He primarily played with the club's reserve team in the Latvian Hockey League but also made five appearances for the main team in the Belarusian Extraleague.

Rise in the Latvian Hockey League

During the 2005-2006 season, Sotnieks became a regular member of Riga 2000's roster. He helped the team win a bronze medal in the Belarusian Extraleague, contributing a goal, four assists, and 10 penalty minutes in 42 games. Sotnieks represented Latvia at the 2006 World Junior Championship in Canada, where he earned two points.

For the next two seasons, Sotnieks established himself as one of Riga 2000's most dependable defensemen in the Latvian Hockey League. He won three consecutive Latvian league titles with the team from 2005 to 2007.

Joining Dinamo Riga

When Dinamo Riga was formed in 2008, Sotnieks was not expected to be a regular player. However, he exceeded expectations and became a regular contributor for the team. As of February 17, 2009, Sotnieks had played in 43 games for Dinamo Riga in the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL), scoring two goals.

International Success

In February 2009, Sotnieks competed for a spot on the Latvian national team for the 2010 Winter Olympics. He earned a place on the team after registering two assists in three games.
