Early Life and Political Activism

Cristina Fernández was born on February 19, 1953, in La Plata, the capital of the largest Argentine province, Buenos Aires. From a young age, she was interested in politics and became an activist of the "Anti-Imperialist Front of Eva Perón." It was within this movement that she met her future husband, who was also passionate about Peronist ideals. Néstor and Cristina got married six months after they met. Both of them received law degrees from La Plata University.

Political Career and Family

In 1976, when the military seized power in Argentina and repression began, the Kirchners moved away from the capital to Néstor's hometown, Santa Cruz. It was here that their son, Máximo, and daughter, Florencia, were born. Cristina began her own political career in Santa Cruz. She first became a representative of the legislative authority in the province and then a deputy and senator in the National Congress.
