Biography of Kumi Yamashita

Kumi Yamashita is a Japanese artist known for her unique and captivating works of art. She specializes in creating images using threads and nails, fabric paintings, and light and shadow installations. Born in Japan, Yamashita currently resides in the United States.

In 1999, Yamashita earned a Master's degree in Fine Arts from the Glasgow School of Art. Prior to that, she obtained a Bachelor's degree in the Arts from the Cornish College of the Arts in Washington in 1994. Her paintings and installations have amazed both art enthusiasts and the general public alike.

One of Yamashita's most renowned projects is called "Constellation," which features portraits created using threads and nails. She meticulously hammers thousands of tiny nails onto a large wooden canvas and then weaves thread around them. The result is a portrait that emerges through the intricate interplay of threads and nails. Yamashita only cuts the thread when the portrait is completed. Currently, the "Constellation" project consists of five portraits, three of which are of children.

In addition to her thread and nail portraits, Yamashita also creates astonishing installations using light and shadow. One of her most famous projects, titled "Light & Shadow," showcases her ingenuity and simplicity. On a white wall, Yamashita arranges colorful paper cutouts that resemble leaves. However, upon closer inspection, each leaf casts a unique shadow that forms a human profile on the white wall. The number of leaves corresponds to the number of profiles, each one distinct from the others. This particular artwork is called "Fragments."

Another remarkable installation by Yamashita, also involving human profiles in shadow, is named "Conversation." This piece features two side-by-side heads in profile on a wall, seemingly engaged in conversation as their lips appear to move. The interplay of light and shadow creates a mesmerizing effect.
