Kyuta Kumagai: A Rising Star in Sumo

At just 10 years old, Japanese prodigy Kyuta Kumagai has already reached an astonishing weight of 187 pounds (85 kilograms). Driven by an unwavering determination to become a yokozuna, the young sumo wrestler consumes a staggering 2,700-4,000 calories daily, exceeding the recommended intake of an adult male.

Early Beginnings

Kyuta's passion for sumo began at an early age. Recognizing his son's potential, Kyuta's father relocated the family to Fukagawa, Tokyo, a district renowned for its sumo tradition. It was there that Kyuta joined the Nomino-no-Sukune Shrine, a sacred training ground for sumo wrestlers. Six days a week, Kyuta undergoes rigorous training sessions, preparing himself for the rigorous demands of the sport.

Sacrifices and Support

The pursuit of Kyuta's sumo career has required immense sacrifice from his family. "I don't gamble," says his father. "Instead, I've put everything on him." Kyuta's determination and unwavering belief in his abilities have rewarded his family's sacrifices. Towering over his peers, he effortlessly defeats opponents five to six years his senior.

Childhood Triumph

In 2020, Kyuta cemented his place as a rising star by capturing the World Children's Sumo Championship for the Under-10 category. This triumph has only fueled his desire to reach the pinnacle of sumo.

Aspirations and the Future

By the time Kyuta completes elementary school at age 12, he will need to gain an additional 44 pounds (20 kilograms). As his father explains, this will provide him with a chance to enter one of the prestigious heya, or sumo stables. Kyuta's exceptional size, prodigious talent, and unwavering determination make him a formidable force in the world of sumo. As he continues on his path, Kyuta holds the promise of becoming one of the greatest sumo wrestlers of his generation.
