Early Life and Education
Born in Los Angeles, Larry Elder was raised by his parents, Randolph and Viola. His father was a World War II veteran, while his mother worked for the U.S. Department of Defense. Larry graduated high school with honors in 1970. In 1974, he earned a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from Brown University. He then pursued a law degree at the University of Michigan Law School, graduating in 1977.
Legal Career
After completing law school, Elder joined the Cleveland firm Squire, Sanders & Dempsey. In 1980, he founded Laurence A. Elder and Associates, an executive search firm. Elder left the firm's management in 1987 but retained ownership until 1995.
Media Career
Television, Film, and VideoIn 1988, Elder began co-hosting the television show Fabric on PBS. In 1997, he and Laura Ingraham hosted the PBS program National Desk. Elder received a Los Angeles Emmy Award in 2000 for his news special "Making Waves." He hosted the Warner Brothers-syndicated series "Moral Court" from 2000 to 2001. In 2004, "The Larry Elder Show" debuted. In 2005, Elder produced and self-financed the film "Michael and Me," a rebuttal to Michael Moore's "Bowling for Columbine." In 2007, Elder co-hosted a talk show on MSNBC.

Elder's commentaries have appeared regularly in Investor's Business Daily, World Net Daily, Townhall.com, Jewish World Review, and FrontPage Magazine. He began writing a nationally syndicated column in 1998, which was distributed through Creators Syndicate. Elder also produces video essays that are published by The Epoch Times.
Radio
In 1994, Elder began hosting an evening talk show on KABC radio in Los Angeles. From 2002 to 2007, his show was nationally syndicated by ABC Radio Networks. In December 2008, Elder launched a daily live podcast. In 2015, he received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Elder's show is currently syndicated nationwide by Salem Radio Network.
Political Career
Elder is a conservative and registered Republican. He is a vocal supporter of former President Donald Trump and has defended him in the aftermath of the 2021 U.S. Capitol attack. In July 2021, Elder announced his candidacy for Governor of California in the 2021 recall election. He stated that he was influenced by his mentor, conservative pundit Dennis Prager. In April 2023, Elder declared his run for the 2024 presidential election.
