Nguyen Phu Trong: A Political and State Leader of Vietnam
Nguyen Phu Trong, a prominent figure in Vietnamese politics, has held significant positions including General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam (CPV), Chairman of the National Assembly, and President of Vietnam.
Early Life and Education
Born on April 14, 1944, Nguyen Phu Trong spent his childhood in Hanoi's suburbs. In 1967, he graduated from the Faculty of Philology at the University of Hanoi. A year later, he joined the CPV.
Career in the Communist Party
Nguyen Phu Trong's career in the CPV spanned several decades. He began his work in the theoretical and political journal "Tap chi Cong San" ("Communist Magazine") in 1967, where he served as Editor-in-Chief from 1991 to 1996. In 1981, he pursued an advanced degree in party building at the Academy of Social Sciences under the CPSU in the Soviet Union, earning a PhD in history in 1983.
Ascendancy to Leadership
In 1994, Nguyen Phu Trong became a member of the CPV Central Committee, and in December 1997, he joined the Politburo. He held various leadership positions within the Politburo, including supervising ideology, culture, and education from 1998 to 2000. He also served as Deputy Chairman and Chairman of the Theoretical Commission of the CPV, responsible for the party's theoretical work. In May 2002, he was elected to the National Assembly.
Leadership of the Communist Party and State
In 2006, Nguyen Phu Trong became Chairman of the National Assembly, a position he held until 2011. At the 11th National Congress of the CPV in 2011, he was elected General Secretary of the CPV, the party's highest-ranking official. He concurrently led the CPV Secretariat and the Central Military Commission.
In 2016, he was re-elected as General Secretary at the 12th National Congress of the CPV. In 2018, a significant milestone was reached when Nguyen Phu Trong was elected President of Vietnam, marking the first time since Ho Chi Minh that one individual held the top positions in both the party and the state.
