Biography of Larry Miller

Larry H. Miller was an American businessman and philanthropist, best known as the owner of the basketball team "Utah Jazz." He was born on April 26, 1944, in Salt Lake City, Utah, USA, to Mary Laurel Horn and Howard Hanley Westa. His parents divorced in 1946, and in 1948, his mother remarried Frank Soren Miller. It was then that Lawrence officially took his stepfather's surname.

After graduating from West High School, Larry worked as a construction worker for his uncle, William Horn, until 1964. In 1964, he began working at American Auto Parts. He enjoyed playing softball and drag racing. In 1966, Miller became the manager of Utah Auto Dealer, the largest auto dealer in the state. In 1970, he started working in two car dealerships - in the Denver Toyota dealer network. In 1978, Larry H. Miller became the senior manager in five car dealerships and decided to open his own dealership network. On May 1, 1979, Larry H. Miller Toyota was opened. The business quickly grew, and by the early 1990s, the dealership network extended beyond Utah, including Arizona, New Mexico, and Colorado, with around forty dealerships.

In April 1985, Larry H. Miller acquired a 50% stake in the Utah Jazz basketball team, and the following year, he became the sole owner. Additionally, Larry H. Miller purchased several other sports teams, subsidized the construction of several major buildings in Salt Lake City, owned the Larry H. Miller Megaplex - a huge movie theater in one of the shopping centers, the financial group Prestige Financial, the Miller Motorsports Park auto racing team, the Fanzz clothing store chain, and the Jordan Commons restaurant chain. Larry H. Miller was a respected philanthropist. He donated around twenty million dollars to a law enforcement and correctional education center and a substantial amount to Salt Lake Community College.

In 1965, Larry H. Miller married Karen Gail Saxon, and they had five children. In 2008, Larry began experiencing complications related to his diabetes, which led to the amputation of both his legs. He later suffered a heart attack and passed away on February 20, 2009, in his hometown.
