The Path of Laura Boldrini: From Journalism to Politics

Laura Boldrini, an Italian journalist and politician, served as the President of the Chamber of Deputies of the Italian Parliament from 2013 to 2018. Her journey from law school to the highest echelons of Italian politics is a testament to her dedication to social justice and human rights.

Early Career and Humanitarian Work

Boldrini graduated from the Law Faculty of the Sapienza University of Rome in 1985 and embarked on a career in journalism with RAI, the Italian public broadcasting company. From 1989 to 1993, she served in the Press Office of the World Food Organization. She then joined the World Food Programme, representing Italy from 1993 to 1998.

From 1998 to 2012, Boldrini became a spokesperson for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), coordinating communication activities in Southern Europe. She participated in numerous missions to conflict zones worldwide, including former Yugoslavia, Afghanistan, Iraq, and Sudan.

Author and Advocate

In April 2010, Boldrini published "Tutti indietro," a book chronicling her experiences in humanitarian crises and highlighting the efforts of those risking their lives to save refugees crossing from the African coast. She also contributed articles to several magazines and maintained a blog for the newspaper La Repubblica.

Political Career

Boldrini entered politics in 2013, running for the Left Ecology Freedom party (SEL) in the parliamentary elections. Although she failed to win a primary election, she was elected to the Chamber of Deputies as one of 37 SEL representatives.

After extensive consultations among parliamentary groups, Boldrini was elected President of the Chamber on March 16, 2013, receiving 327 of 618 votes. She became the third woman in Italian history to hold the position of parliamentary speaker.

Recognition and Awards

Boldrini's work has earned her numerous awards and honors, including the Medal of the National Commission for Equal Opportunities and Equal Treatment of Women and Men (1999), Knight of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic (2004), and the National Council of Journalists' Best Journalist of the Year Award (2009).
