Lauren Satcliffe, a British woman, is a victim of interstitial cystitis, a chronic bladder condition that causes severe pain and discomfort. Her kidneys and bladder have never functioned properly, and at the age of 12, she developed this debilitating disease. Unfortunately, it took doctors 11 years to accurately diagnose her condition. Satcliffe describes her symptoms as feeling like her insides are covered in small cuts and filled with acid. The unpleasant form of cystitis led to her inability to leave her home and posed a terrifying possibility of losing her job. The thought of having sex with her partner also brought her great distress. It is estimated that around 400,000 people in the country suffer from this chronic bladder disease, known as interstitial cystitis. Although mostly affecting women, men can also develop this unpleasant condition. It is characterized by constant pain, frequent urination, and a burning sensation during urination. While most cystitis cases are caused by infections, interstitial cystitis is an inflammatory disease. The walls of the bladder can become inflamed after childbirth, surgeries, fighting infections, or for no apparent reason. The main risk group is considered to be women over 40, but young people are not immune to cystitis either.
A Life of Struggles
Satcliffe's bladder and kidney problems began immediately after birth, and chronic infections eventually led to the development of the disease. The need to frequently use the restroom greatly complicates Lauren's life, but this is not the only problem she faces. The painful sensations have become an integral part of Satcliffe's life, and the side effects of the medications she takes do not help. According to Lauren, the medications cause constant worry and hair loss. In addition, she experienced early menopause, which shattered all her dreams of having children. For 12 years, Lauren had no idea what was causing her suffering. From the outside, it seemed as if she simply had a difficult relationship with cystitis that refused to go away. It was only diagnosed as chronic cystitis this year, and unfortunately, finding an effective treatment for this disease is yet to be accomplished. The situation of such delayed diagnosis is unfortunately quite typical; patients are often considered victims of common urinary tract infections. In such cases, women are given antibiotics that do not solve the overall problem due to the absence of an infection. However, enduring the symptoms of this disease is simply unbearable. Even when at home and rarely leaving, Lauren Satcliffe still suffers greatly. Her relationship with her partner has also been significantly affected by the illness, and she has given up hope of having a normal sex life. Fortunately, her partner is understanding and fully supportive, but in other aspects of life, Satcliffe faces far greater difficulties. Finding a job that can accommodate her constant pain and other illness-related issues seems almost impossible. The numerous challenges and constant stress have taken a toll on Satcliffe's mental well-being. She suffers from severe depression, which is unlikely to heal without curing the underlying disease.
