Early Life and CareerLawrence Naismith was born on December 14, 1908, in Thames Ditton, Surrey, England. He embarked on his acting career in 1948 and continued to grace both film and television screens until 1982.
Film Highlights
Naismith's cinematic credits spanned a wide range of genres. He appeared in the James Bond film "Diamonds Are Forever" (1971), the Shakespearean adaptation "Richard III" (1955), the fantasy epic "Jason and the Argonauts" (1963), the war drama "Sink the Bismarck!" (1960), and Anthony Asquith's "Carrington VC" (1954). In Roy Ward Baker's historical drama "A Night to Remember" (1958), Naismith played the iconic Captain Edward John Smith of the Titanic.
Broadway and "Camelot"
In addition to his film roles, Naismith performed on Broadway in the musical "Here's Love" in 1963. He also portrayed the non-singing role of Merlin in the 1967 film version of the musical "Camelot."
Television Appearances
Naismith made several memorable television appearances. He played Judge Fulton in the crime-adventure series "The Persuaders!" (1971), starring Tony Curtis and Roger Moore. He also appeared as the enigmatic Mr. Blunden in the children's ghost film "The Amazing Mr. Blunden" (1972). Two years later, he portrayed Emperor Franz Joseph I of Austria in the television drama "Fall of Eagles." In 1978, Naismith played the Prince of Verona in a television adaptation of Shakespeare's "Romeo & Juliet."
Personal Life and Legacy
Beyond acting, Naismith was the proprietor of the "Rowbarge" pub in Woolhampton, Berkshire, and an avid cricket enthusiast. He married Vera Bocca, and they had one son together. Lawrence Naismith passed away on June 5, 1992, in Southport, Queensland, Australia.
