Saint Lawrence Wang Bin: A Life of Faith and Martyrdom
Lawrence Wang Bin was a devout Roman Catholic saint and martyr who lived during the tumultuous period of Christian persecution in China.
Early Life and Family
Born in 1802 to a Catholic family, Lawrence's parents were arrested and exiled to Mongolia for their faith, where they later died. After his parents' exile, Lawrence found refuge with his older sister, who was also eventually expelled from China.
Adulthood and Faith
At the age of 20, Lawrence married and fathered two children. He became a respected elder in his local Catholic community. In 1854, he assisted Catholic missionaries in their work in various Chinese villages.
Religious Partnership and Martyrdom
While traveling in Guizhou province, Lawrence met Jerome Lu Tingmei, a fellow Catholic, and together they embarked on a journey to spread Christianity among the Chinese. On January 13, 1858, while engaged in prayer, they were arrested and sentenced to death alongside Agatha Lin Zhao. All three faced martyrdom on January 28, 1858.
Beatification and Canonization
In recognition of his unwavering faith and sacrifice, Lawrence Wang Bin was beatified by Pope Pius X on May 2, 1909. On October 1, 2000, he was canonized by Pope John Paul II as one of 120 Chinese Martyrs.
Feast Day
The Catholic Church commemorates Saint Lawrence Wang Bin's feast day on July 9th. His life and martyrdom continue to inspire countless Catholics, reminding them of the strength and endurance of faith.
