Lee Camp: American Comedian, Author, and Podcaster

Lee Camp was born in the Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C., to a military doctor. Of Jewish descent, Camp has two brothers. His family initially resided in Bethesda, Maryland, before relocating to Richmond, Virginia, when he was eight years old. He attended the University of Virginia, where he contributed to The Cavalier Daily as a writer. Graduating in 2002, Camp majored in English and psychology.

Stand-Up Comedy and Writing

On his 19th birthday, Camp took the stage for the first time at an open mic night at Matt's Pub in Richmond. After graduating from university, he moved to New York City, performing regularly at Ha! Comedy Club. As his stand-up career progressed, Camp began incorporating political material, leading to performances at events like Netroots Nation conventions and Rock the Vote rallies.

In addition to stand-up, Camp published his first book, "Not Too Bright, Not Too Dumb," in 2002. This collection featured his best humorous columns from The Cavalier Daily. He also co-authored "BIGfib's Book of Bullshit" (2005) with Nick Alexander and Alan Lord, a compilation of stories from the satirical website BIGfib.com. Camp has also contributed articles to The Onion and The Huffington Post.

Broadcasting

In 2017, Camp and Eleanor Goldfield launched the podcast Common Censored, which focuses on issues of mass activism. He became the host and head writer of "Redacted Tonight with Lee Camp," a weekly comedy news show that aired on RT America for eight years. Speaking with The Washington Post Magazine, Camp acknowledged the network's Russian government funding and its lack of corporate advertising, which he cited as a reason for his affiliation.

Post-Redacted Career

Following the closure of RT America due to Russia's invasion of Ukraine, Camp accused the "U.S. government's military machinery" of silencing the network. In July 2022, he launched a new show, "The Most Censored News," with Lee Camp on MintPress News. On YouTube, Camp continues to host a news show titled "Dangerous Ideas with Lee Camp."
