Lee Thomas: A Journey of Courage and Inspiration

Discovering Vitiligo

Lee Thomas, an American reporter, kept a terrible secret about his health condition for ten years, believing that it would jeopardize his career. It was vitiligo, an incurable skin disorder, which caused depression, psychological discomfort, and low self-esteem. Thomas first noticed the unusual changes in his skin color in 1994 after a visit to the hairdresser. Initially, he thought it was a scratch from the scissors, but the appearance of white patches on other parts of his body prompted him to seek medical advice. The diagnosis was horrifying: vitiligo, a pigment disorder that turns patches of the skin into milky-white color. Despite ongoing research, the exact cause of vitiligo remains unknown. Previously rare, the condition has now affected 4% of the world's population, and doctors believe that stress, which is a constant companion for many young people, could be one of the contributing factors.

A Dream to Become a Journalist

From a young age, Lee Thomas aspired to be a journalist. Learning about his vitiligo, he never considered sharing his struggles, fearing it would prematurely end his budding career. He left Louisville, his hometown, and moved to New York, where he landed a job at WABC radio station. Fate then led him to Los Angeles and later to Detroit, where he became a reporter for WJBK television station. Thomas quickly gained a loyal audience who appreciated his interesting and humorous storytelling style. Neither his colleagues nor the viewers suspected the efforts he put into concealing his white spots under layers of makeup. However, he knew that the makeup would eventually fail as the spots became more prominent. His fears were confirmed during one of his television broadcasts when a little girl saw his uncovered hands and burst into tears. At that moment, Thomas believed his career was over, but the outcome turned out far differently.

A Journey of Courage and Inspiration

Instead of being fired, Thomas was called to meet with the station director, who asked him to appear before her without makeup. She then encouraged him to share his story with the world. In November 2005, Thomas bravely revealed his condition and appeared on television without makeup for the first time. The broadcast generated an overwhelming response, with the station receiving 40-50 letters per day. People thanked Thomas for his support and found inspiration in his life story. This prompted Thomas to start writing another chapter of his memoir. He had actually begun writing his thoughts down in a letter format immediately after learning about his diagnosis, but his writing style drastically changed after his revelation.

Advocacy and Empowerment

From that point on, Thomas wrote not just for himself but for those who faced similar challenges and sought support, understanding, and empathy. His memoir, titled 'Turning White,' was initially released by a small publisher in 2007 and sold thousands of copies. Following its release, Thomas gained recognition as one of the most inspiring speakers who ever shared their stories with the public. Today, alongside his commitments with companies like Vanguard Investments and Google, Thomas actively participates in various charitable organizations. He shares the secrets to his success and his methods for overcoming significant obstacles, considering it his calling.

Thomas says, "This is my true purpose. I am fortunate to have not only the job of my dreams but also the opportunity to share my life experiences, witness the inspiration of people for whom faith and change become the most delightful surprise on their life's journey."
