Ole Frøisland: Norwegian Violinist and Educator

Early Life and Education

Ole Frøisland was born in Elverum, Norway. He began his musical studies with Einar Schjøyen, the town organist in Hamar. He later studied in Oslo with Oscar Holst and in Copenhagen with Julius Koppel.

Orchestral Career

In 1958, Frøisland joined the Norwegian Radio Orchestra. Two years later, he became the concertmaster of the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra. He also held the first violin position in the Hindar Quartet from 1960 until its dissolution in 1980.

Teaching and Legacy

From 1973, Frøisland taught at various conservatories in Norway, including the Norwegian State Academy of Music. One of his notable students was Ragin Wenk-Wolf. He was also instrumental in establishing the music festival in his hometown of Elverum.

Awards and Recognition

Throughout his career, Frøisland received numerous awards and accolades, including the King's Cultural Medal of Merit in 1983. He was also an honorary member of the Norwegian Society of Musicians.

Later Years and Death

In his later years, Frøisland continued to perform and teach. He passed away in 2012 at the age of 82. Frøisland left behind a lasting legacy as one of Norway's most respected violinists and educators.
