Lars Carleson

Lars Carleson is a renowned Swedish mathematician renowned for his groundbreaking contributions to modern mathematical analysis and function theory.

Early Life and Education

Lars Carleson was born on May 18, 1928, in Stockholm, Sweden. His passion for mathematics emerged at an early age, and he pursued his studies at the University of Uppsala, where he earned his doctoral degree in 1956.

Mathematical Achievements

Carleson's most significant mathematical achievement was his proof of Lusin's conjecture (1915) in 1966. This conjecture, which had remained unsolved for half a century, proved the almost everywhere convergence of the Fourier series of functions in L2.

Honours and Recognitions

In recognition of his groundbreaking work, the Carleson theorem and the Carleson measure bear his name. Furthermore, Carleson was elected a foreign member of the Soviet Academy of Sciences in 1982 and became a foreign member of the Russian Academy of Sciences after its dissolution in 1991. Additionally, he was awarded the prestigious Lomonosov Gold Medal in 2002 and became a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences.
