Biography of Alexey Korzh
Alexey Alexandrovich Korzh, a laureate of the State Prize of the USSR and a Honored Scientist of the Ukrainian SSR, was born on April 23, 1924, in the village of Obolon, Poltava region, Ukraine. He is the son of Alexander Mikhailovich Korzh (1895-1988) and Maria Dmitrievna Korzh (1895-1978). Alexey Korzh is married to Raisa Glebovna Korzh (born in 1924) and they have two sons: Nikolai Alexeevich Korzh (born in 1947) and Sergei Alexeevich Korzh (born in 1952).
Professional Career
In 1951, Alexey Korzh graduated from the Kharkov Medical Institute and began his career at the Kharkov Research Institute of Orthopedics and Traumatology named after Sitenko. Over the course of four and a half decades (1951-1996), he worked his way up from a junior researcher to become the director of the institute. During this time, he also served as the head of the clinical department.
From 1955 to 1998, Alexey Korzh also worked as a professor at the Department of Orthopedics and Traumatology at the Kharkov Institute for Advanced Medical Studies. He held various positions including assistant, associate professor, professor, and department head.
Contributions to Orthopedics and Traumatology
Alexey Korzh made significant contributions to the field of orthopedics and traumatology as an author, ideologist, and leader of various research directions. His work on bone and joint transplantation earned him the State Prize of the USSR in 1977. He also conducted research on functional treatment of bone fractures, heterotopic post-traumatic bone formation, bone tissue regeneration, reconstructive joint surgery, conservative surgical methods for treating bone tumors, and the development and implementation of ceramics in clinical practice.
Together with B.I. Simenach, he developed a methodology for conceptual modeling in orthopedics and traumatology based on a systems approach. Their research focused on the genesis of many hereditary predisposed diseases. Alexey Korzh authored 568 publications, including notable works such as "Restoration of Lower Limb Support" (1984), "Surgical Treatment of Pelvic Diseases" (1985), "Dysplastic Coxarthrosis" (1986), "Ceramoplasty in Orthopedics and Traumatology" (1992), "Bone and Joint Injuries in Children" (1994), "Osteoporosis" (1996), and "Development of the Theory of Dysplastic Hereditary Predisposed Scoliosis (Conceptual Modeling)" (2002). He also holds 47 patents and author certificates.
Achievements and Honors
In 1967, Alexey Korzh was elected as a corresponding member of the Academy of Medical Sciences of the USSR (now Russian Academy of Medical Sciences) and became a full member in 1988. He is also an academician of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (1992) and the Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine (1993). He was a member of the International Society of Orthopedic Surgeons and Traumatologists (SICOT) from 1969 to 2000 and served as the president of the Kharkov Medical Society from 1972 to 2002. Since 1968, he has been the editor-in-chief of the journal "Orthopedics, Traumatology, and Prosthetics".
Alexey Korzh has been honored with the title of Honored Scientist of the Ukrainian SSR (1982) and has received numerous awards including the Orders of Lenin, the Patriotic War of the 2nd degree, "Sign of Honor", and "For Courage" of the 3rd degree (1999). He has also been awarded two golden medals of the Exhibition of Achievements of National Economy of the USSR (1976) and a Certificate of Appreciation from the Ukrainian Parliament (2002).
Personal Life
Apart from his professional achievements, Alexey Alexandrovich Korzh has a passion for cars, theater, and mushroom picking. He currently resides and works in Kharkov, Ukraine.
