Early Life and Education

Leonid Makarovych Kravchuk was born in the village of Velykyy Zhytyn, Rivne Oblast, on January 10, 1934. He obtained a higher education, graduating from the Kyiv State University in 1958. In 1970, he completed the Academy of Social Sciences under the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union (CPSU), earning a Candidate of Economic Sciences degree.

Political Career in the Communist Party

Kravchuk's political journey began in 1958 as a teacher at the Chernivtsi Financial College. From 1960 to 1967, he held various roles within the Chernivtsi Regional Committee of the CPSU, including consultant-methodologist, lecturer, assistant secretary, and head of the agitation and propaganda department. In 1967, he pursued an advanced degree at the Academy of Social Sciences under the Central Committee of the CPSU, which he completed in 1970.

Upon his return to Ukraine, Kravchuk held senior positions within the Central Committee of the CPSU, rising through the ranks from a sector head to the head of the agitation and propaganda department by 1988. In 1989, he became a candidate member of the Politburo, and in 1990, a full member. During this time, he played a prominent role in the ideological sphere of the Communist Party.

Ukrainian Independence and the Presidency

In March 1990, Kravchuk was elected to the Supreme Council of Ukraine from Yampolivskiy Electoral District No. 39. From 1990 to 1991, he served as Chairman of the Supreme Council of Ukraine.

On December 1, 1991, Kravchuk was elected the first President of independent Ukraine in the first direct presidential elections, securing 61.59% of the vote. As President, he oversaw Ukraine's transition to independence from the Soviet Union and played a crucial role in negotiating the dissolution of the USSR.

Presidential Defeat and Later Career

Kravchuk ran for re-election in the 1994 presidential elections but lost to former Prime Minister Leonid Kuchma in the second round, receiving 45.1% of the vote. In September 1994, he was elected to the Supreme Council from Terebovlanskiy Electoral District No. 364. He subsequently joined the "Constitutional Centre" parliamentary group.

In 1998, Kravchuk was re-elected to the Supreme Council of Ukraine on the party list of the United Social Democratic Party of Ukraine (SDPU). He served as a member of the Committee on International Affairs and Relations with the CIS. Kravchuk remained a prominent figure in Ukrainian politics, and in 1998, he joined the SDPU Politburo.

Kravchuk was a member of the CPSU Central Committee since 1990 and resigned from the Communist Party on August 19, 1991. He was awarded the Order of Prince Yaroslav the Wise, V and IV degrees.
