Leopold II, King of the Belgians

Early Life and Accession

Leopold II was born on April 9, 1835, to King Leopold I of Belgium and Louise Marie d'Orléans. He ascended to the throne on December 17, 1865, after his father's death.

King of Controversies

Leopold II's reign was marked by the brutal exploitation of the Congo River Basin. He established commercial companies that engaged in genocide and the plundering of the region's resources. His ruthless actions earned him condemnation from European countries, with Emperor Franz Joseph I of Austria calling him a "crowned broker" and Lenin describing him as a "swindler, financier, and adventurer."

Personal Life

Leopold II's daughter Stephanie married Crown Prince Rudolf of Austria, whose death in 1889 was attributed to murder-suicide. Despite having four legitimate children with his wife, Marie Henriette of Austria, his only son died in childhood. In 1909, he married Blanche Delacroix, a French prostitute, five days before his death.

Legacy

Leopold II died on December 17, 1909, leaving behind a controversial legacy. His brutal exploitation of the Congo marred his reign, but he also contributed to Belgium's industrial development and modernization. He was succeeded by his nephew, Albert I.
