André Abegglen: The Swiss Football Legend
Early CareerAndré Abegglen was a Swiss footballer born in 1909. He began his career with Old Boys FC before moving to Black Stars FC and then to FC Basel in quick succession. Known for wearing shatterproof glasses during matches, Abegglen left FC Basel in 1932 to join Servette FC.
Servette Glory
Under the guidance of manager Karl Rappan, Abegglen led Servette to the Swiss Championship title in his first season, repeating the feat the following year. In the 1933–34 season, he became the Swiss Championship's top scorer with an astonishing 40 goals.
International Debut and World Cup Triumph
Abegglen made his debut for the Swiss national team in November 1933. At the 1934 FIFA World Cup, he etched his name in history by scoring the first goal for Switzerland in the tournament's history, against the Netherlands. He went on to score three goals in the tournament.
Playing and Coaching Abroad
In 1935, Abegglen joined BSC Young Boys as a player-coach. Later, he moved to French club Stade de Reims, but his efforts were not enough to prevent the team from finishing at the bottom of the league. He returned to Switzerland, playing for FC St. Gallen and Young Fellows Juventus before retiring.
World Cup 1938 and International Farewell
Abegglen was part of the Swiss squad for the 1938 FIFA World Cup, although he did not make any appearances. His final international match was against Belgium in May 1938. In total, he made 17 appearances for Switzerland, scoring 12 goals.
