Dimitru Braghiș: Moldovan Statesman and Diplomat
Early Life and CareerDimitru Braghiș was born on December 28, 1957, in the village of Gratiesti, Moldova. He holds a degree in electrical engineering from the Polytechnic Institute, which he obtained in 1980. Braghiș began his career as an engineer at the Chisinau Tractor Plant.
Involvement in Politics
From 1981 to 1992, Braghiș was an active member of the Communist Komsomol organization. In 1989, he was elected to the Moldovan Parliament and served as deputy director of "Moldova Exim" from 1992 to 1995. He then became head of the Department of International Economic Relations at the Ministry of Economy (1995-1997).
Prime Ministership (1999-2001)
In 1997, Braghiș was appointed Deputy Minister of Economy and Reforms. On December 21, 1999, he was elected Prime Minister of Moldova. During his tenure, Braghiș's Alliance gained 13.42% of votes and 19 seats in Parliament. He ran for president in 2001 but lost to Vladimir Voronin. Braghiș's term as Prime Minister ended on April 19, 2001, when Vasile Tarlev succeeded him.
Political Career Post-Premiership
Braghiș remained a member of Parliament from 2001 to 2009. In 2005, he ran for the office of mayor of Chisinau as an independent candidate but finished second with 20.65% of the vote. Braghiș withdrew from the second round when the elections were declared null due to low voter turnout.
Diplomatic Career (2015-2017)
On October 28, 2015, Braghiș was appointed Ambassador of Moldova to Russia and concurrently to Tajikistan. He held this position until March 1, 2017, when the Moldovan government recalled him.
