Early Career in MoscowAt 19 years old, Vietnamese league goalkeeper Dang Van Lam reflects on his unique journey that led him from the esteemed youth academies of Spartak Moscow and Dynamo Moscow to the tropical shores of Vietnam.
Spartak Moscow
Lam's footballing adventure began at age 8 with the Spartak Moscow youth academy. After a promising trial match against the club's 1994 birth year team, he was officially signed to their ranks.
"I played as a goalkeeper for five years at Spartak," recalls Lam. "I remember when I first joined, my mother bought a bunch of chocolates."
During his time at Spartak, Lam traveled extensively with the team, participating in tournaments across Europe. He credits iconic coach Aleksandr Gergiev with instilling a strong sporting character in his players.
Transition to Dynamo Moscow
After Gergiev's departure from Spartak, Lam's career hit a roadblock due to an injury and subsequent loss of form. Seeking playing time, he was loaned out to Krylya Sovetov Moscow.
Later, Lam faced another setback at Spartak when he was told that he was no longer needed by the club. This prompted him to reach out to Dynamo Moscow, where he was accepted and played for several seasons.
Departure for Vietnam
After five years with Dynamo, Lam decided to explore opportunities in Vietnam, his father's homeland. Through personal connections, he contacted several clubs and eventually landed a contract with Hoang Anh Gia Lai (HAGL) in the Vietnamese V-League.
"I was initially taken aback by the subpar conditions at some of the clubs I visited," says Lam. "But I was impressed by the facilities at HAGL, which has a partnership with Arsenal FC's academy."
Life in Vietnam
Cultural AdjustmentRelocating to Vietnam brought about significant cultural differences for Lam. He grappled with the oppressive heat, unfamiliar cuisine, and linguistic barriers.
"I'm picky when it comes to food," admits Lam. "I can eat Vietnamese food, but I prefer European food."
Football in Vietnam
Training in Vietnam differs from Russia, with a heavy emphasis on goalkeeper psychology. HAGL's Thai goalkeeper coach played a vital role in Lam's development.
Despite being the only foreign player in the team, Lam is respected by his Vietnamese teammates. His exceptional height of 1.87 meters sets him apart and often draws attention.
Fan Base
Lam has a loyal following of Vietnamese fans who admire his skills and personality. He appreciates their support but admits that the atmosphere at matches lacks the intensity and chanting common in Russian stadiums.
"I miss the passionate chants and the sound of drums," says Lam. "Here, fans mostly blow into these tiny horns."
Social Media
Lam's journey has been chronicled on social media, including an infamous incident where a fan page was hacked and used to spread false information. However, he remains grateful for the support and recognition he receives online.
