Lev Nikolaevich Gorelov: A Distinguished Soviet General
Lev Nikolaevich Gorelov was a prominent Soviet military commander who served with distinction during World War II, the invasion of Czechoslovakia, and the Soviet-Afghan War.
Childhood and Early Life
Lev Nikolayevich Gorelov was born on August 2, 1922, in Kstishchi, Kaluga Oblast, Russia. His parents were Nikolai Filippovich and Domna Dmitriyevna Gorelov.
Military Career in World War II
In 1940, Gorelov joined the Red Army and was assigned to the 202nd Airborne Brigade. During World War II, he fought on the 3rd and 2nd Ukrainian Fronts as commander of an automatic rifle company.
In March 1945, Gorelov's unit crossed the Rába River in Hungary, destroying enemy defenses and establishing a defensive position, enabling the successful crossing of the river. For his valor, Gorelov received the Order of the Red Star.
Post-War Service
After the war, Gorelov continued his service in the Airborne Forces. He graduated from the Frunze Military Academy in 1958 and held various command positions. Gorelov played a pivotal role in developing new tactical principles for airborne operations.
Invasion of Czechoslovakia
In 1968, Gorelov commanded the 7th Airborne Division during the Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia. Under his leadership, the division's operation was executed with exceptional precision and efficiency, earning him the Order of the Red Banner.
Assignment in Afghanistan
In 1975, Gorelov was appointed as the chief military advisor to the President of Afghanistan. He played a key role in reorganizing and modernizing the Afghan army and counterinsurgency efforts.
Gorelov opposed the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan in 1979, believing that the Afghan army was capable of handling the situation. Despite his objection, the invasion proceeded.
Later Career and Retirement
In 1980, Gorelov was reassigned to the Odessa Military District as Deputy Commander for Military Schools. He retired in 1984.
Legacy and Honors
Lev Nikolaevich Gorelov received numerous decorations and awards, including the Order of the Red Banner (three times), Order of the Patriotic War (first degree), Order of the Red Star (three times), and Order "For Service to the Fatherland in the Armed Forces of the USSR" (third degree).
Gorelov is widely respected for his bravery, leadership, and strategic thinking. He continues to be an active member of the veteran community in Odessa, Ukraine.
