Biography of Lev Markov

Lev Nikolayevich Markov, born on May 18, 1936, in Moscow, is a renowned figure in the field of sports medicine. He is recognized as a Merited Coach of the USSR, Merited Doctor of Russia, and President of the Russian Federation of Sports Medicine. Markov has authored over 120 publications, including works published abroad. He is the founder and longstanding chief editor of the scientific journal "Bulletin of Sports Medicine in Russia."

Early Life and Education

Lev Markov was born to Nikolay Vasilyevich Markov (1903-1960), who worked in the OSOAVIAKHIM organization, and Anna Alexandrovna Mitina (1901-1974), a doctor at a railway polyclinic. His son, Lev Lvovich Markov, born in 1959, became a doctor at the Moscow City Medical and Physical Culture Dispensary No. 1. In 1954, after completing secondary school, Lev Markov enrolled at the Vitebsk Medical Institute and later transferred to the 2nd Pirogov Medical Institute, which he graduated from in 1960.

Professional Career

After completing his studies, Lev Markov was assigned to work at the Moscow City Medical and Physical Culture Dispensary No. 1. He has served as the chief physician of this institution since 1963. Markov has been involved in the medical preparation of numerous outstanding athletes, including two-time Olympic champion and multiple USSR champion Olga Pleshkova, hockey players A. Maltsev, P. Bure, V. Kasatonov, and others. Over the years, he has treated famous personalities such as Yu. Vizbor, A. Rosenbaum, N. Karachentsov, A. Korzhakov, V. Anpilov, and many others.

Contributions to Sports Medicine

Lev Markov is widely recognized as one of the leading specialists in the field of sports medicine in Russia and abroad. He was the first to discover and describe the clinical signs and causes of death related to the sudden cardiac death syndrome in athletes. He has made significant contributions to the prevention, treatment, and research of this sports-related disease. Markov has also dedicated his efforts to combating doping in sports, anti-doping control, and the prevention of doping substance abuse. His research has formed the basis for the development of a unique medical-biological training program for athletes and cosmonauts.

Achievements and Recognition

Under Markov's guidance, the national teams and top athletes of the USSR were prepared for competitions at various levels, including the Olympic Games, World Championships, and European Championships in sports such as cross-country skiing, biathlon, and speed skating. He participated in the Olympic delegations of the USSR in France, Canada, Yugoslavia, Norway, Japan, and served as the chief physician of the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow. Additionally, Markov was involved in the preparation and treatment of fighter pilots and cosmonauts, for which he received medals from S.P. Korolev and Y.A. Gagarin.

Lev Markov has actively participated in Russian and international congresses and conferences, delivering speeches on combating drug addiction and doping at the session of the European Parliament in Prague (1996) and the World Seminar of Sports Physicians in Paris (1998). He has also given a series of lectures at the universities of Pittsburgh and Los Angeles in the United States. Markov organized the World Symposiums on Sports Medicine in Moscow. He has been awarded numerous honors, including the Orders of Friendship of Peoples (1980) and multiple Orders of Honor. His scientific research in sports has been recognized with gold medals from VDNH and the Sports Committee of the USSR. In 1996, he received the "Triumph" Award and was recognized as the best sports doctor in the Russian Federation. That same year, he was awarded the Mayor of Moscow's prize for his research on "Changes in Hemostasis in Athletes During Intense Physical Exercise."

Lev Markov is an Academician of the Academy of Entrepreneurs of Russia. Apart from his scientific and practical activities, he also works as a professor at the Russian Academy of Physical Education and Sport. He is an avid sports enthusiast, painter, and philosopher.
