Biography of Lev Revutsky
Lev Revutsky was a Ukrainian Soviet composer, People's Artist of the USSR (1944). He was awarded the Stalin Prize of the second degree (1941) and the State Prize of the Ukrainian SSR named after Taras Shevchenko (1966). Revutsky was an academician of the Ukrainian SSR Academy of Sciences (1957) and a Hero of Socialist Labor (1969). He was born on February 8 (20), 1889, in the village of Irzhavets (now in Ichnia district of Chernihiv region, Ukraine).
Education and Career
From 1903, Revutsky studied at the Music School in Kyiv, where he also learned piano under the guidance of N. V. Lysenko. From 1907, he studied law at Kyiv University, and from 1913, he simultaneously studied at the Kyiv Conservatory under R. M. Glier (composition) and Hryhoriy Khodorchuk (piano). He graduated from both educational institutions in 1916. From 1934 to 1960, Revutsky taught at the Kyiv Conservatory, and from 1944 to 1948, he served as the head of the Union of Composers of Ukraine. He also prepared a complete collection of works by Mykola Lysenko. Revutsky was the author of two symphonies, a piano concerto (1934), choral and vocal compositions.
Legacy
Lev Revutsky was appointed as an academician of the Ukrainian SSR Academy of Sciences in 1957. He passed away on March 30, 1977, and was buried in Kyiv at the Baikove Cemetery. His wife was Sofia, and their son, Yevheny (1919-2007), had a grandson named Andriy and a great-grandson named Taras. Lev Revutsky's name is attributed to several places and institutions, including a street in Kyiv called "Poznyaki," the State Male Choral Capella of Ukraine named after L. Revutsky, the Chernihiv Musical College, and the Children's Music School No. 5 in Kyiv. Additionally, a memorial plaque is installed on the house at 16 Sofiivska Street in Kyiv.
