The Path to Bodybuilding

It is impossible to definitively answer how people get into bodybuilding. Arnold Schwarzenegger, who was once introverted and suppressed by a tyrant father, elevated athletics to the rank of religion. Bodybuilding became his only outlet, a way to earn the respect of his family and the cult-like devotion of those around him. Famous strongman Lou Ferrigno (the actor who played the main role in "The Incredible Hulk" series) suffered from deafness since birth and struggled to speak. He discovered bodybuilding as a solo sport. Hiding from the ridicule of his neighbors in the basement of his own home, he spent hours lifting weights, which eventually resulted in million-dollar film roles and worldwide sporting fame. Each athlete's story is as unique as the structure of their body. The journey of Australian prodigy Lee Priest into the world of professional sports may seem like a fairy tale to some, but it was indeed his reality.

Early Life and Inspiration

Lee was born on July 6, 1972, in Newcastle, into a family where three generations had already embraced the iron. It seemed that the love for weightlifting had been passed down to Lee in one of his 46 chromosomes, but that was not the case. As time went on, Lee recalled being captivated by Superman cartoons during his childhood. At the age of 3, his mother sewed him a costume identical to his favorite hero's. After that, young Lee vowed to become as strong as his fictional idol. Keeping his love for the imaginary superhero in his heart, Lee first stepped into a gym at the age of 13. His grandfather, a former army wrestling champion, showed him a couple of simple weightlifting exercises, to which Lee responded with a simple statement: "I'll stay with you."

Rapid Success

Lee made his debut at the "Sydney Bodybuilding Classic '86" a few months later and immediately placed first. After this victory, the young champion began to experiment. When he turned 15, his 38-year-old mother suggested that they compete together. Naturally, the star duo impressed everyone and once again claimed victory. Under the guise of a family team, Lee won several more high-profile tournaments. His incredible potential as the "Superman," as the sports reporters called him, was realized at such a rapid pace that at the age of 17, he earned his professional IFBB card by winning the national championship in Australia. Currently, at the age of 26, Lee has already participated in the prestigious "Mr. Olympia" competition twice. In 1997, he even caused a sensation by placing 6th and surpassing renowned bodybuilders such as Chris Cormier and Ronnie Coleman!

Persistence and Challenges

Lee's long-standing fascination with fantastic cartoons continues to influence him to this day. He often poses in a Superman costume in front of cameras, and he recently got a tattoo of the letter "S" on his shoulder. Although nature has generously endowed the entire Priest family with genetics, it never greatly affected an important aspect for athletes – height. Standing at 163 cm, Lee's only drawback compared to other bodybuilding giants. Why do we say "other giants"? Because despite his modest height, Lee has managed to build incredible muscle mass. His weight during the off-season is 129 kg, and on competition day, it drops to 102 kg! Rumor has it that Lee is currently focusing on gaining even more mass and plans to enter the 1999 "Mr. Olympia" competition weighing no less than 110 kg, ready to defend his title as the real-life Superman.
