Early Life and Education

Christian Lindner was born on December 7, 1979, in Wuppertal, Germany. His father was a mathematics and computer science teacher. After completing high school in 1998 and alternative civilian service, Lindner studied political science at the University of Bonn. He received his MA degree in 2006, specializing in tax competition and income distribution. He began writing a dissertation in 2006 but has not completed it due to his political activities.

Military Career

During his studies, Lindner served as a reserve officer in the German Air Force. He reached the rank of Hauptmann in 2011.

Early Political Career

Lindner joined the Free Democratic Party (FDP) in 1995. He became a member of the FDP board in North Rhine-Westphalia in 1998 and its general secretary in 2004. He was elected to the North Rhine-Westphalia state parliament in 2000. Lindner also became a member of the FDP's Federal Executive Committee in 2007.

Member of the Bundestag

Since 2009, Lindner has been a member of the German Bundestag. He has served on the Bundestag's committees on family affairs, migration, and culture, and on the Committee on Finance.

FDP General Secretary and State Chairman

Lindner served as FDP General Secretary from 2009 to 2011, and as FDP State Chairman in North Rhine-Westphalia from 2012 to 2013. He led the party to a successful result in the 2012 state election.

FDP Chairman

After the FDP failed to pass the 5% threshold in the 2013 federal election, Lindner was elected FDP Chairman. He led the party to regain representation in the Bundestag in the 2017 federal election. Under Lindner's leadership, the FDP has become a significant political force in Germany.

Federal Minister of Finance

On December 8, 2021, Lindner was appointed Federal Minister of Finance in the Scholz government. He is responsible for overseeing Germany's financial policies and budget.

Other Political Activities

Lindner has been a delegate to the Federal Convention to elect the German President, and has played a role in European liberal politics. He has been a vocal advocate for fiscal responsibility and free trade.
