Biography of Lily Allen
Early Life and EducationLily Rose Allen, an English singer, was born on May 2, 1985, in London, to famous English comedian Keith Allen and his wife and producer, Alison Owen. During her childhood, Lily moved a lot, living in London for a while and then in Ireland with her mother. She attended 13 different schools and was often expelled. Despite her rebellious image, Lily had the opportunity to study at prestigious schools in England, including Hill House and Bedales, two of the most expensive private schools in Britain. In a radio interview, Lily later said, "Education didn't work out well for me, unlike many people."
Early Musical Career
Due to her constant change of schools, Lily had difficulty making lasting friendships. She found solace in books and a variety of music genres, ranging from T.Rex and The Slits to Happy Mondays and drum and bass. At the age of 14, she even ran away from home to attend the Glastonbury Festival. Lily took her first steps in music at the age of 16 when she met George Lamb, a former manager of the band Audio Bullys, who introduced her to the music industry. Through Lamb, Lily met the producer Future Cut and recorded her first songs.
Record Deals and Online Fame
In 2002, Lily signed a contract with Warner Records, even though she hadn't released any songs yet. She later admitted that the contract was solely due to her father's influence. The contract was soon canceled, and Lily continued to work independently. In early 2005, she decided to sign a new contract with Regal Records, a subsidiary of the Parlophone/EMI holding company. Rather than following the label's suggestion to immediately record her debut album, Lily uploaded her early tracks (the ones that got her the contract) to her own MySpace page. She also started writing a diary there, regularly posting amusing and witty texts about her life. Gradually, her diary gained more readers, and people started sharing links to her songs. The news about Lily reached major English magazines and music websites. DJ Joe Wiley even played one of her demo recordings on BBC Radio One. Around the same time, Lily started performing every Thursday at the popular London club, Notting Hill Arts Club. Her unconventional approach to sharing her music gained attention throughout Europe.
Music Success and Performances
Lily's debut single, "Smile," the first song she wrote with Future Cut, immediately topped the European charts. Her album, "Alright, Still...," was released in July 2006 and received positive reviews, particularly praising Lily's diverse musical tastes and witty lyrics. After the album's release, Lily embarked on a tour, and her live performances were equally energetic and entertaining. Her setlist included a sarcastic parody of 50 Cent's "Window Shopper" titled "Nan, You're the Window Shopper" and a lively cover of Kaiser Chiefs' "Oh My God."
