Biography of Charice Pempengco

Charice Pempengco, a Filipino singer and actress, gained popularity through YouTube. She was hailed by Oprah Winfrey as the "most talented girl in the world." Pempengco became the first Asian artist to have her release enter the top ten of the Billboard 200 album chart. She successfully transitioned her vocal prowess onto television, making her character Sunshine Corazon in the hit series "Glee."

Early Life

Charmaine Clarice Relucio Pempengco was born on May 10, 1992, in Laguna, Philippines. Growing up with a single mother, she began participating in amateur singing contests at the age of seven, eventually progressing to more serious televised competitions. Charice has competed in nearly 100 vocal contests in total. In 2005, she appeared on the talent show "Little Big Star," the Filipino version of "American Idol." Although Pempengco reached the finals, she finished in third place based on the votes. Prior to this, she had already performed on local TV shows and appeared in commercials. However, it wasn't until 2007 that she gained worldwide recognition when her performance videos went viral on YouTube.

Rise to Fame

The internet phenomenon caught the attention of Swedish company "Ten Songs/Productions," and with their help, Charice recorded seven songs in 2007, including six covers and her original song "Amazing." As a finalist on "Little Big Star," Pempengco was invited to the South Korean talent show "Star King," where she performed alongside Kyuhyun from the boy band "Super Junior." In January 2008, she sang for the Philippine President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo at the Malacañang Palace, and in May of the same year, her debut album "Charice" was released in the Philippines. This mini-album, containing six songs and six karaoke versions, achieved gold status in October 2008 and went platinum in 2009.

International Recognition

Charice appeared on an episode of "The Oprah Winfrey Show" where she performed Whitney Houston's "I Have Nothing." Following this, Winfrey reached out to the legendary music producer David Foster to help Charice. Subsequently, the Filipina singer made her debut on the international concert stage at the "Hitman: David Foster and Friends" tribute concert in Las Vegas, Nevada. She performed a medley of songs from "The Bodyguard" and her signature song "And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going." Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli, one of the performers at this concert and an idol of Charice, expressed interest in singing a duet with her and personally invited her to his "The Cinema Tribute" concert in Lajatico, Tuscany. Charice and Bocelli performed the song "The Prayer" together. She also performed in front of 50,000 football fans at Feyenoord's anniversary in the Netherlands, singing the team's anthem "You'll Never Walk Alone." Oprah Winfrey, in another episode of her show, referred to Charice as the "most talented girl in the world." The Laguna native performed Celine Dion's hit song "My Heart Will Go On" with David Foster accompanying her on the piano. Afterward, Winfrey surprised Charice by connecting her live via satellite to Dion, who invited her to sing a duet at Madison Square Garden as part of Dion's "Taking Chances Tour."

Continued Success

Charice's second album, "My Inspiration," featuring 12 tracks, was released in May 2009. She performed a cover of Helen Reddy's "You and Me Against the World" with her mother. The album achieved platinum status in December 2009. On another episode of "The Oprah Winfrey Show," Charice presented her first international single, "Note to God," written by Diane Warren and produced by David Foster. Her first major concert, "Charice: The Journey Begins," sold out on June 27, 2009, at the SMX Convention Center. Her guests for the grand show were Christian Bautista, Kuh Ledesma, and the finalists of "Little Big Star." Her self-titled international album, released on May 11, 2010, under the label "Reprise Records," debuted at number eight on the Billboard 200 album chart, making it the first Asian release to enter the top ten of the chart. On June 22, 2010, the singer confirmed her appearance in the second season of the TV series "Glee." Following this announcement, Charice released her promotional single "Crescent Moon" in Japan, which is the English version of the Japanese song "Mikazuki" by Ayaka.

Ryan Murphy, the music producer of "Glee," described Charice's voice as "when this girl opens her mouth, angels fly out."
