Early Life and Family
Born in Rural ChinaTan Sri Lim Goh Tong was born on 28 May 1918, in Anxi, Fujian, China, as the fifth child of a humble family. His childhood was spent in a peaceful and isolated village, providing a refuge from the turmoil in other parts of China.
Orphanhood and Journey to Malaysia
At the age of 16, Lim lost his father, forcing him to support his family alongside his older brother. In 1937, amidst worsening political conditions, Lim embarked on a perilous journey to Malaysia.
Early Career and Business Ventures
Carpenter and ContractorIn Malaysia, Lim initially worked as a carpenter for two years, learning the language and customs. He later became a building subcontractor, securing a significant contract to construct a two-story school.
Metal Scrap Trading
During the Japanese occupation of Malaysia, Lim transitioned into farming, trading, and metal scrap brokerage. With the withdrawal of Japan, he saw an opportunity in selling used machinery to the new government for mining and plantations.
Mining Success
Lim's metal trading led him to a joint venture with an iron ore company, from which emerged the first Chinese-owned company in the country to adopt modern machinery for mining.
Genting Group and Resorts
Construction ProjectsWith his accumulated wealth from mining, Lim ventured into construction, co-founding 'Kien Huat Private Limited' with his uncles. The company became a prominent builder, undertaking major projects.
Hilltop Resort Vision
In 1965, during a business trip to Cameron Highlands, Lim was struck by the potential of the mountainous area for tourism. He acquired land and embarked on an ambitious project to build a resort in a seemingly desolate location.
Genting Highlands Resort
Construction ChallengesLim faced skepticism and financial strain while developing Genting Highlands Resort. However, he remained determined, investing heavily and even initiating a second resort project simultaneously.
Official Opening and Legacy
On 8 May 1971, Genting Highlands Resort officially opened its doors. Lim continued to expand the resort complex over the following decades, turning it into one of the world's most iconic destinations.
Leadership and Legacy
Son's SuccessionOn 31 December 2003, Lim Kok Thay, Lim's son, took over the reins of 'Genting Group.'
Passing and Lasting Impact
Tan Sri Lim Goh Tong passed away on 23 October 2007, at the age of 89. His legacy as a visionary entrepreneur and tourism pioneer remains unparalleled in Malaysia and beyond.
