Early Life and Education

Lina Mendoni was born on April 1, 1960, in Athens, Greece, to a family with roots in Chios. She graduated from the private Arsakeion School in 1977. Subsequently, she pursued higher education at the University of Athens, earning a degree in Classics from the Faculty of Philosophy in 1981 and a degree in History and Archaeology in 1984. In 1988, she completed her doctoral degree in Archaeology with distinction, also from the University of Athens.

Career in the Ministry of Culture

Mendoni's career in public service began in the Ministry of Environment, Urban Planning, and Public Works in 1994, where she served under Minister Kosta Laliotis. From March 1999 to March 2004, she held the position of General Secretary of the Ministry of Culture under Ministers Elisavet Papazoi, Theodoros Pangalos, and Evangelos Venizelos.

Her subsequent roles in the Ministry of Culture included:

General Secretary of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism (2009-2015)

General Secretary of the Ministry of Education, Religion, Culture, and Sports (2015)

General Secretary of the Ministry of Culture and Sports (2015-2019)

Political Affiliations

Prior to 2019, Mendoni was a member of the Panhellenic Socialist Movement (PASOK), which was part of the Movement of Change alliance. However, on July 8, 2019, following her appointment to the cabinet of Kyriakos Mitsotakis, she was expelled from the Movement of Change and joined the New Democracy party.

Appointment as Minister of Culture and Sports

On July 9, 2019, Lina Mendoni was appointed Minister of Culture and Sports in the Mitsotakis cabinet, following the parliamentary elections of July 7, 2019, which were won by New Democracy.
