Lina Broga: A Literary Life
Early Life and EducationLina Broga was born into a peasant family and raised in the countryside. In 1951, she graduated from the Kaunas Polytechnic Institute (now Kaunas University of Technology) with a degree in engineering.
Career and Retirement
After graduation, Broga worked as an engineer and taught at the Vilnius Civil Engineering Institute. In her spare time, she pursued her passion for literature. Upon retirement in 1984, she dedicated herself fully to her literary pursuits.
Literary Contributions
Broga's poetry, written in a traditional style, was published in periodicals, anthologies, and books beginning in 1968. She became a member of the Writers' Union of Lithuania. In addition to her poetry, she published articles on literature and translation, as well as memoirs.
Remembrances of Una Babickaitė-Graičiūnienė
Of particular significance are Broga's memoirs on the actress and director Una Babickaitė-Graičiūnienė. After Babickaitė-Graičiūnienė's passing, Broga preserved her documents, artwork, and paintings, eventually donating them to the Museum of Theatre, Music, and Cinema in Vilnius. In 2001, she compiled and edited an extensive book about Babickaitė-Graičiūnienė, including her memoirs, diary, and letters.
Literary Translations
Broga's translations into Lithuanian include the complete Russian-language poetry of Jurgis Baltrušaitis. She also translated Eastern poetry, such as selected lyrics by Nizami and the 1985 poem "Leyla and Majnun." Additionally, she translated the works of Omar Khayyam, Hafiz, Khagani Shirvani, Kemali, Makhtumkuli, and Vazeh.
Legacy
Lina Broga's literary contributions, particularly her translations of Eastern poetry and her memoirs on Una Babickaitė-Graičiūnienė, have left a lasting legacy in Lithuanian literature. She passed away and was buried in the Dusetas Cemetery in the Zarasai district.
